Chronology of NGI developments in New Zealand

2000 to 2002

AARnet Advanced Networking Workshop in Adelaide
10-11 March, 2000
Bill St Arnaud from CANARIE in Canada was a main speaker at this
workshop. What he had to say made the New Zealand attendees realise
just how far behind the rest of the world New Zealand was in regard to
research and education networking, and advanced networking.

15 May 2000
A meeting of Directors of IT held while the Directors were attending a
UCC briefing agreed that a paper should be written to inform the
Minister of Technology, Paul Swain

August 2000
The paper ('National Computer Networks in Research and Education')
foreshadowed in May 2000 was completed and sent to appropriate
Ministers.

19 October 2000
Neil James addressed Vice-Chancellors meeting held at Otago University
Subsequently the NZVCC Newsletter published an article of support in
November 2000.

11 July 20001
Article published in the ComputerWorld about upcoming e-Vison Breakfast
Seminar.

24 July 2001
Industry NZ and e-Vision hosted an Interactive Breakfast Seminar on
'Internet2'. John Houlker introduced the seminar and Neil James and
Simon Riley addressed the meeting. A discussion panel was convened for
a Q&A seesion.

3 August 2001
InternetNZ Internet2 steering group formed

28 August 2001
First meeting of Internet2 Steering Group set up by InternetNZ in
response to the E-Vision Breakfast. The terms of reference for the
Group were agreed to be:

• Raise awareness and potential benefits of advanced computing
services and applications for the New Zealand research community,
the commercial sector, and society in general.

• Facilitate the development of partnerships and consortiums with
the research community and industry that will keep New Zeqaland at
the cutting edge of advanced computing and networking technologies.

• Provide input to Government industry policy formulation.
Agreed to convene a meeting of interested parties to discuss a way to
get New Zealand on to the advanced networking world scene

10 October 2001

Neil James attended the AARNet ADvanced Networking workshop at the
University of New South Wales, and made contact with Heather Boyles,
International Officer for Internet2

16 October 2001
Meeting of interested parties. The major outcome was an agreement to
pursue the goal of implementing an advanced research and education
network for New Zealand. It was resolved to write a paper laying out
the situation and suggesting a course of action.

13 December 2001
Paper 'Internet2 Steering Group Report' completed.
It recommends that a Capability Study be undertaken

27 February 2002

March 2002
Request for funding for Capability Study

3 May 2002
Deputy Prime Minister announces Government support of $50,000 for
Capability Study

June 2002
Lawrence Zwimpfer appointed to lead the Capability Study

19 September 2002
Report Back meeting. Feedback underlined the concept of an 'acceptable
use' free network, and very strongly supported gettingon with the job
of implementing the NGI network as soon as possible.

4 October 2002
Final Report from the Capability Study released

October 30 2002
Acting on the recommendations from the report first meeting of NGI
Consortium is held. there are 10 initial members

3 November2002
NGI Keynote presentation at the TUANZ National Broadband Applications
Conference in Nelson
