Membership Policy

NGI Membership

  • Organisations may be Members. There is no personal individual membership.
  • Any institution or organisation with an active participation, or interest, in advanced networking may apply, in writing, to become a Member and, if it meets the criteria for the appropriate category of membership as prescribed from time to time by the Society, the Board may accept or reject that organisation as a Member.
  • There shall be two classes of membership, Full Members and Associate Members. Each Member shall pay an annual subscription in accordance with Rule 14.1 of the Society Constitution. The Society is to list each Member on the Members’ Register. The Members’ Register is to be held at the Society’s registered office.
  • The Board may amend the Bylaws to create further classes of membership.

Termination of membership

  • A Member wishing to resign from the Society must give notice of resignation to the Secretary in writing or in such electronic form as the Board shall decide.
  • A subscription is valid for exactly one year. During the period covered by the subscription, the Member is a Financial Member. At the point of the subscription lapsing, the Member will become non-financial and lose all voting (including nominating, seconding and petitioning) rights in the Society. If the subscription remains unpaid for a further three months, the membership terminates and a new application for membership has to be made. If the overdue subscription is paid within the three month period, the Member is deemed to have been a Financial Member from the commencement of that period.
  • Membership of the Society may be terminated by the Society. Should a Member's actions be in serious conflict with the rules or objects of the Society, the Board is empowered to terminate the membership of that person provided that the process in Schedule 1 of the Rules must be followed in these circumstances .

Membership conditions and reciprocity

  • Members must sign a valid application agreement with the NGI. This application commits the Member to ensuring that they comply with the Membership Policy.

  • Members must pay all NGI Membership fees and levies as required.

  • Network operators, carriers or significant suppliers to the Society, may not be Full members but can be Associate Members

  • Associate members:

o Are not entitled to vote.
o May not have their delegate elected as an Officer of the Society (Chairperson, Treasure or Officer).
o May be declined access to connect to the NGI-NZ network

  • Where peering is established with international R&E networks further Membership and User conditions may need to be established. Likewise, international R&E networks wishing to connect to the NZ NGI will be required to meet the conditions of the NZ Network.

Interpretation, Disputes, and Adjudication

  • Members seeking interpretation of the Policy should refer their queries to NGI Board.

  • Members must immediately notify NGI Management if they become aware of any breach of Membership Policy, or conflict of interest (perceived or real).
